Chinese Proverb

Over a long distance, you learn about the strength of your horse; over a long time, you learn about the character of your friend.

  1. Very true! The investment and commitment has to be evident for the process to work. Typically, the time / distance is short for the outcome to be assessed. You usually have a fair indication of value pretty quickly in a relationship / partnership...unless you just aren't paying attention!

  2. Yup, it takes a broad spectrum of events take place and endure before one can truly "earn" the position of "friend". A older gentlemen once told me, "I am 57 years old and don’t have enough time left in my life to make new "friends".

  3. My only response to that would be don't close the door to possibilities because standards for assessing friendship worthiness are so high. I'm not saying that standards shouldn't exist -- hell, my own are immensely high and very few people truly make it to become gifts and treasures in my life. I at least allow the 'front porch' to be open. Experiencing different people from different walks is what makes life exciting. You have to be willing to get out there and explore.
