"Discovered" pineapples?

Excerpt from a Wikipedia entry on pineapples:

The plant was brought to the Hawaiian islands by the Polynesians and formally discovered there by Captain Cook in 1778. Although it was discovered by Cook, John Kidwell is credited with the introduction of the pineapple industry in Hawaii.

I find the part I bolded ha-larious! If it was BROUGHT there by the Polynesians then how can it be DISCOVERED by Captain Cook?  My thought is if someone else brought it there, then it really can't be discovered <--- just sayin...

Another EQ in Japan :(

A powerful quake struck Japan on Thursday, killing two and triggering a tsunami warning for one prefecture and advisories in others, officials said.

The warning and advisories were lifted about 90 minutes later, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, but it left millions of Japanese rattled. The quake was closer to the Japanese coast than last month's 9.0-magnitude quake.

There were reports of two casualties in the earthquake zone, and 132 people were injured, officials said. Seventeen of the 132 were thought to have serious injuries, the National Police Agency said. A handful of roads were damaged as well as a few homes. The Yamagata Prefectural office said a 63-year-old woman died after a power outage caused by the quake stopped her oxygen, which relied on electricity. A second person died in the Miyagi Prefecture, the office there said, though it did not say who or how.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was a magnitude 7.4. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was 7.1. The USGS also said Thursday's quake could be considered an aftershock, making it the biggest one since the March 11 quake.

Workers evacuated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the quake, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said. The company said it has communication with the plant, and the power is still on there. There were no immediate reports of damage, it said.

The workers returned later and were assessing any impact, CNN's Kyung Lah reported Friday. TEPCO later said its work was not impacted by the quake.

About four million homes remained without power, police said, and water and train services were disrupted in some places.

The quake's epicenter was off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The USGS said the quake was centered 41 miles (66 kilometers) from Sendai -- one of the areas worst hit by last month's 9.0-magnitude quake -- and 73 miles (118 kilometers) from Fukushima, where a crisis has been under way at the nuclear plant since last month's tsunami.

Public broadcaster NHK had reported a tsunami warning for Miyagi, saying people in that area should evacuate away from the shore to a safe place.

NHK also reported tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and for the Iwate, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said based on all available data, "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is not a tsunami threat to Hawaii."

The quake was centered 207 miles (333 kilometers) from Tokyo, the USGS said. It was 30.4 miles (49 kilometers) deep, the agency reported. The Japanese Meteorological Agency estimated the depth as 60 kilometers.

The earthquake took place shortly after 11:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. ET).

The Practical Impossibility and the Theoretical Absurdity of Skepticism

In the world of Philosophy, there are always two groups of philosophers willing to exchange their ideas to rebut what the other group asserted; the believers and the skeptics.

Believers are those with positive outlook in all fields of philosophy. These are the ones who are successful enough in presenting and defending their own doctrines which, until now, is still used in many Universities teaching Philosophy and all its fields. Examples of these philosophers are Aristotle, Socrates and Thomas Aquinas, whose works and doctrines are still very important today.

On the other hand, there will always be skeptics who fail to believe whatever it is that comes their way. In Epistemology, skeptics are those who assert that truth cannot be achieved in any way possible. Universal skeptics doubt or deny the validity of knowledge and assert that they cannot be convinced by any argument.

In this article, we are not trying to convert skeptics themselves but we will show them that skepticism is simply an absurdity in the field of Philosophy as well as in day to day living; we will show them that skepticism is an improper approach to attain the truth and thus logically, it is intrinsically wrong.

Why is SkepticismPractical Impossibility?

No man in his sound mind can ever live without certainty of any sort. Even the most renowned skeptic cannot deny the fact that he exists and that he can feel anything he touches, he can taste anything he puts in his mouth, he can hear a sound, he can see when he opens his eyes and can feel sad and happy. It is because it’s difficult to negate or get away entirely from the nature of being human.

What can a man do if he tries to deny anything he can see, touch, feel, hear and taste? Nothing. Therefore, it is a practical impossibility that a man can live without practical certitude in any way. And the fact that he knows exactly what his name is, is evident that he is certain what he is called.

Why is Skepticism Theoretical Absurdity?

No man can ever doubt or deny principles, arguments or every thing; not even in a very speculative way. And this has been proven by skeptics themselves due to their inconsistencies. In fact, skeptics are trying to convince everyone that we cannot attain the truth, and they are certain about it. In other words, they are trying to convince us thateveryone cannot be certain, BUT they are certain about it.

Now, skeptics must either have valid reasons  for their doubt or have no valid reasons at all. The case is, if they have valid reasons they know something which is valid and true but that will make them not skeptics anymore. However, if they do not have reasons to support their arguments, then they do not have reason to doubt everything.

Conclusion

Not all skeptics remained skeptics along the way because they knew that it is just aphilosophic absurdity and that their arguments and doctrines will lead them nowhere if they continue to doubt in anything. The point is, it would always better to believe in something or someone, than to roam the world without having something or someone to believe in.

As for the skeptics out there or those people who are trying to believe they are skeptics, here are passages from St. Augustine to make you think;

“If I err, I exist. For one who does not exist, cannot err; and by the very fact that I err, I exist. Since, therefore, I exist, if I err, how can I err about my existence when it is certain that I exist if I err?”

“If he doubts, he lives; if he doubts, he remembers why he doubts; if he doubts, he understands that he doubts; if he doubts, he wants to be certain; if he doubts, he thinks; if he doubts, he knows that he does not know; if he doubts, he judges that he must not give a hasty consent.”

Obama's Birth Certificate <---Let it go Donald!

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...[/caption]

Uggg!  Maybe now Donald Trump will shut up about this distracting point.  After 3 years of presidency, 2 wars, a financial mess and major clean up all Donal Trump can focus on is Obama's birth validity?  It seems to be another way to simply invalidate a black man.  Why not question ANY of the governments personal and their origins?  So now what Donald, are you going to question whether its real or not?

Time for change!

Not EVERYTHING that is faced can be changed, but NOTHING can be changed until it is faced.

~James Arthur Baldwin

Changes are never far from our door, whether it’s breaking up with an ex, having a best friend move away, the death of a relative, the loss of a job or a demotion or something that once meant a great deal to you but that has not turned out the way you hoped it would. Being prepared your changing world involves flexibility, strength of self-purpose and belief in one’s own worth. Here are some ideas to help you.

Be prepared. Life is full of unexpected surprises; don’t let this be a lesson you refuse to learn. Death, loss and strange situations will be a part of your life, no matter how much you may try to cocoon yourself with reasoning, savings and assets. The major key to coping with change is to accept the reality of change and its inevitability.

Realize there’s only one thing you can control – yourself. Once you have accepted the reality that you cannot change others and that the only way they can change you is if you let them, then you suddenly find yourself empowered. Empowerment is a key element of change acceptance and change management. When you feel empowered, you will roll with changes as a whale rolls through the ocean waves, commanding and unbothered by events but conscious of a need to roll with the surrounding effects to lessen their impacts.

Take time to recoup. If you are grieving after a death, be it a person or a pet, do not let anyone tell you how long to grieve for. That decision is yours. It does make sense to make a decision in your own mind about what grieving you need to do, as your life cannot meander in sorrow forever. However, it is most clear that those who avoid grieving end up worse off and can experience break-downs and inability to cope at unexpected times. With grief for death, there will always be a piece of your heart missing but if you accept this and you are willing to carry the memories as lively as can be for the rest of your life, this will help you reach some acceptance of what has happened. If it is a job loss or some other personal loss that is not death, you still need mourning time to assuage your sadness and grief over a loss of something that once filled a large part of your life. Perhaps a small ending ceremony of some sort will help to give you a sense of closure and allow you to move forward.

Be purposeful. Change occurs but you do not need to be buffeted by it. Have a purpose in life, no matter what it is, that serves as your own personal anchor. While it is important to be open to change and to be flexible as to the possibilities that change opens up for you, it is also important to remain true to yourself and the dreams that you hold in life. This self-belief and your dreams are your anchor. Whatever else life throws in your way, these are the barometers by which you can measure your progress in the world and how you are reacting to change. Be prepared to question your methods of getting to where you wish to go but be less prepared to change your destination if it means dismantling the person you are inside.

Look for the silver lining of change. Remember the adage Every cloud has a silver lining. There is a reason for this saying – wise humans of the past knew well that change could herald both fear and opportunity. Once the fog of shock, despair and anger pass, look for the opportunities that exist in the change. There may be an amazing find, such as memoirs written by a lost one that were uncovered when his or her house was emptied out and these recall many wonderful times of all family members. Or the fact that there is a gain in time for those who have lost employment, time in which to reanalyze one’s life and direction and make fruitful changes to oneself and one’s sense of direction. Look for the opportunities that you can make use of rather than continuously viewing the change as a deep loss from which time nothing will ever be the same.

Leave harping on behind you. When a change thrusts you into complaining, it can be understandable for a short period of time. Friends and family will rally at the beginning of a misfortune. However, as time progresses, constant complaining turns you into your family’s and friend’s misfortune and does absolutely nothing to improve your state of affairs. Rather, you may alienate the very people who would be happy to support you through your hardships if you turn into a grouch and someone who feels permanently victimized and scolds the entire world for your troubles. A little ranting is fine at the beginning; a sourpuss for life is someone who becomes increasingly isolated. Do not allow this to happen to you.

Move on. You cannot remain rooted in the current or a past situation. It may feel comfortable and returning to a habit is always the simpler path of least resistance. Yet, change requires change from you as well and you will need to learn to resist turning back to the past and trying to recreate what once was. Forge on into the future and stand proud. Use what you have learned but don’t let it use you.

Language of the Body

To me its not ironic that 93% of all communication take places via kinesics (body language), but yet we present a difference between whats said and acted out. The english language is made up of roughly 988,968 words but we only frequently speak just under 2,000 of them but yet we can't seem to convey a complete thought.

Basically, with the level of cognition, the availability of higher level thinking and the bonus: an opposable thumb, we suck at communicating with another. Some how we have gotten lazy and think we are too busy to even say we are too busy. In doing so, we are being selfish and not thinking ion iota about who else time affects.

We need to learn to be more proficient in communicating to each other oh AND keeping our word!!!

Its all quite sad...

Passive Fairness

1 : pleasing to the eye or mind especially because of fresh, charming, or flawless quality
2 : superficially pleasing : specious she trusted his fair promises
3 a : clean, pure fair sparkling water b : clear, legible
4 : not stormy or foul : fine fair weather
5 : ample a fair estate
6 a : marked by impartiality and honesty : free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism a very fair person to do business with b (1) : conforming with the established rules : allowed (2) : consonant with merit or importance : due a fair share c : open to legitimate pursuit, attack, or ridicule fair game
7 a : promising, likely in a fair way to win b : favorable to a ship's course a fair wind
8 archaic : free of obstacles
9 : not dark fair skin
10 a : sufficient but not ample : adequate a fair understanding of the work b : moderately numerous, large, or significant takes a fair amount of time
11 : being such to the utmost : utter a fair treat to watch him

I am around a bunch of the "dominant culture" that have NO clue of the things they say or do. The are VERY quick to skip the bad stuff and act like they are fair and equitable, but NEVER say anything about their errors unless they are told. They think fair is the fact that I am allowed with them and wasn't turned away b/c of my color. I will note that this for the moment is exclusive to a group I am with...

A white group wants to serve "urban" populations which are generally made up of indigent blacks ad mexicans. They have not ONE person of color on their staff, nor has ANY of them brought it up. Furthermore, my colleagues haven't brought it up either.

And THATS my point. Color is NEVER brought up until color enters the room. How can "they" be fair if their concerns are limited by their own skin color? Am I the only one that sees racial and ethnic ignorance to the point of verbalizing it? I am just perplexed at this entire system of privilege.

They are my great white hopes and I am the loud black asking for their help. Now by no means is this a harp on color, but lets be real they just don't pay attention and again think fair is now expressed by a few blacks in the room amongst them.

In a room with 97 people, there was only 5 people of color. That sure as hell isn't 13% now is it? I also find it intriguing how "they" are so intentional, precise, and meticulous in making the impossible happen, but cannot seem to get more people of color around to balance things out.

Oh, I know, I know, people of color (for the most part) just don't seem to meet the bar educationally, business wise or economically. Whew - we have a looooooooooooong way to go.

Man I had to vent this. No one here gets it. To have a convo with a white person about this comes out as the typical black/white convo and how unfair it all is. As a race of privilege the forethought of inclusion and parity is FAR from fair at ALL and whites confessing to the issue is a joke. This is what I call, passive fairness.
